In 2011, many small companies will be looking to dip their toes into virtualisation as a way and means of cutting costs and increasing flexibility.
VMware are putting a great deal of focus on this market with the updated VSphere Essentials and Essentials Plus bundles.
These bundles allow an organisation to run VMware vSphere 4.1 on up to 3 physical servers each with a maximum of 2 processors (slots) and up to 6 cores on each processor.
Amongst a host of new features now included are two of the main features I felt were missing from the previous versions, VMware vMotion and VMware High Availability.
VMware vMotion is the ability to migrate a virtual machine from one physical host to another with no downtime
VMware High Availability monitors virtual machines to detect OS and hardware failures and restarts virtual machines on other physical servers when a failure is detected.
The Essentials and Essentials Plus bundles now provide viable solutions for IT managers of smaller companies to create the dynamic IT Infrastructure they have wanted without the big price tag.
