Despite companies around the world still being affected by the global economic downturn, a recent poll suggests firms are set to up their spending on IT services such as virtualisation.
According to technology publication NetworkWorld, virtualisation, mobility, cloud computing and social media are going to be the most popular areas of expansion among IT directors and chief information officers in 2011.
The news source cited a study recently undertaken by Forrester Research, which predicted spending on IT by companies will rise by 7.4 per cent this year.
Ron Smith, director of IT at logistics provider Transplace, commented on the desire to invest more in computing in 2011 by saying: "If it's out there and if it can help [our business], we're looking at it. We're thrifty in the way we spend our money, but we go after the best."
Mr Smith’s remarks follow recent praise for virtualisation software from Scott Emo, head of product marketing at CheckPoint Software Technologies, who told EnterpriseMobileProducts the technology can give companies an "additional layer of security defence".
"The industry is seeing a broader range of businesses realising that security must be a more strategic part of their overall IT infrastructure than ever before and that protection must be applied with a layered approach," he added.
