This recently released addition to the Dell EMC storage portfolio provides a function rich, scalable entry point into the SC storage range that scales up to 1PB (or 2PB with 4MB page sizes). Whilst providing a greats storage platform in its own right, it also offers extra life for those with Dell EqualLogic storage that is reaching end of life in a production environment.
The SCv3000 is introduced to replace the highly successful SCv2000 range, completing the refresh of the whole SC range. The SCv2000 provided high performance storage resource at a cost effective entry price. However, there was always the feeling that this entry level system lacked of the highly desirable features of the larger members of the SC family.
This has been addressed with the SCv3000, by adding new features, either as standard or optional.
The headline feature additions include
Data Progression: Otherwise known as automated storage tiering. This feature keeps the high performance drives free for rapid write and immediate read access. It also moves less active data to lower cost, higher capacity drives. The SCv3000 supports configurations ranging from 0-100% flash storage.
Intelligent compression: A highly efficient space saving feature
SC Series replication: The ability to replicate to other SC arrays makes the SCv3000 ideal for ROBO deployment or SC based DR configurations.
Live Migrate / Federation: Live movement of data across heterogeneous SC arrays for load balancing
Live volume: Auto-failover between synchronised volumes for DR / Business Continuity
Chargeback: Enables costs to be allocated automatically to budget centres for accountability
PS/ EqualLogic replication: Enables further value to be gained from legacy EqualLogic arrays in DR
The last feature is of great value to customers with EqualLogic storage in production environments that is due for replacement.
SCv3000 and the SC range
With the exception of Deduplication and Multi-vLAN tagging, this brings the SCv3000 in line with the higher range models as shown below:
SCv3000 and the SC range
The key differentiator between the models in the SC range is down to hardware configuration. With this comes the scalability to larger capacities.
There are 2 controller options and 3 storage expansion enclosures for the SCv3000 range, all of which can be configured to suit requirements. The base specifications are:
3.5″ drive units
SCv3000 Controller: 3U, Dual controller, 16 x 3.5″ drive storage array
SCv300 Enclosure: 2U, Dual controller,12 x 3.5″ enclosure
SCv360 Enclosure: 4U, Dual controller,60 x 3.5″ enclosure
2.5″ drive units
SCv3020 Controller: 3U, 30 x 2.5″ drive storage array
SCv320 Enclosure: 2U, 24 x 2.5″ enclosure
Deploying new storage
Sizing: Whilst some of the stress has been removed from storage selection with affordable SSD configurations, it is still very important to understand your storage profile. Fortunately, analysing this has also become much easier with the evolution of the Dell EMC LIVE OPTICS analysis tools. Back in the first days after the Compellent (now SC Series), existing Dell partners were introduced this methodology as the way to size this storage. The advantages of running it quickly lead to its adoption across the storage portfolio. I have attended site meetings and been presented with Live Optics reports produced to support bids by competitive products such as HP storage, such is the value of this analysis tool.
At Keytech, our Consultants use Live Optics as the means to understand a new environment. Whilst a Doctor would run an ECG to visualise a heart condition, we use Live Optics to visualise the health and performance of our customers datacentre, the heart of their business.
Configuration: Before SSD disks became widely available, storage arrays would be configured with an excessive number of rotational disks. This was needed to achieve the IOPS required. With this came extra purchase cost, power consumption, heat dissipation and rack space – not to mention noise! As costs for SSD disks has reduced and reliability increased, it can be deployed across an entire array, or for front end high performance for active data. Again, the DPACK tool is invaluable in providing the evidence needed to support sizing decisions.
