Another great day here at VMworld Europe in Barcelona, just as many sessions completed and just as many miles walked. Today consisted of sessions relating to multiple VMware products ranging from Horizon to NSX, we also managed to sneak in a little Veeam update session, which very much pleased at least one Keytech consultant here this week (no names)
I would like to just give you a brief overview of Horizon, what it does and the two main types of remote access it provides
What is Horizon View?
Horizon View provides virtual desktop capabilities to users utilizing VMware’s virtualization technology. A desktop operating system runs within a virtual machine on the vSphere host.
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and Remote Desktop Services (RDS) are the most commonly used terms when talking about accessing remote workloads. Although similar, they have their differences. Horizon View offers both VDI and RDS solutions, but their focus and drive is on the VDI element
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
In a VDI environment, each user is allocated their own dedicated VM that runs a separate operating system. This provides an isolated environment for the user. Each user has dedicated Virtual Machine (VM) with an Operating System, they can install/uninstall applications with full or partial administration rights within the VM.
Remote Desktop Services (RDS)
Remote Desktop Service (RDS), allows users to connect remotely to a network. While the RDS client is installed on the user system, the RDS server software is installed on the server, and a remote connection is established between the two. While users in the RDS network connect to the server using a VM, this VM is shared with other users and operates on the same server OS for all users.
Horizon View plays a major part in VMware’s portfolio and is expanding constantly with the new features.

Now tonight is the night for what some might call ‘the legendary’ VMworld Fest. Tonight, we are being treated to live music from ‘The Kooks’, Rolling Stones cover band ‘The Counterfeit Stones, several DJ’s and duelling pianos! We are looking forward to unwinding after 3 packed days and more to come!
